BIOmarkers for LEwy body and Associated Dementias in the real world
The BIOLEAD study is investigating whether the use of biomarkers (such as blood samples or brain imaging) can clinically help predict the development of dementia in people with mild memory problems.
There is evidence that brain imaging, blood tests and comprehensive memory tests can predict likelihood of future dementia. However, research has not examined whether these tests can be incorporated in clinical practice and used to improve diagnosis and care of patients.
In this study participants are people with a memory clinic appointment. In addition to normal assessment, they will have a blood test, memory and thinking tests. Optionally they will also have an MRI scan and a lumbar puncture to collect fluid from the spinal cord. A follow up exam a year later will assess progression.
If successful, this approach could allow for earlier dementia diagnosis and treatment, leading to better outcomes for patients.
